How Nevada lodging tax works
Nevada has no state-level lodging tax. Every dollar of room tax is collected at the county level under the Transient Lodging Tax statute, and the rates are among the highest in the country:
- Clark County / Las Vegas Strip: 13.38% combined transient lodging tax
- Clark County / Downtown Las Vegas: 13% combined
- Clark County / unincorporated: 12% combined
- Washoe County / Reno / Sparks: 13% combined
- Douglas County / South Lake Tahoe: 13.5% combined
- Carson City: 10% combined
These rates are NOT add-ons to a state tax — they’re the whole tax. Nevada’s hotel-room industry pays the entire lodging-tax burden through counties and dedicated tourism districts.
Platform collection
Airbnb and Vrbo collect and remit the Clark County, Washoe County, and Douglas County transient lodging tax as marketplace facilitators. For smaller counties (Elko, Nye, Lyon, etc.), coverage is incomplete — verify before assuming collection.
The Nevada Department of Taxation and each county’s room-tax authority publish marketplace-facilitator status. Always check the latest list.
What this means in practice
- For major STR markets (Vegas, Reno, Tahoe) — platforms handle it.
- For smaller counties — verify; you may need to register with the county’s room-tax authority, file monthly returns, and remit.
- Clark County is strict on STR licensing. Tax compliance is separate from the STR business license, which is required separately and renewed annually.
- 30+ night stays — generally exempt from transient lodging tax in most Nevada counties. Verify locally.
- No state sales tax on lodging — Nevada doesn’t stack a state sales tax. The transient lodging tax is the only tax on the room charge.
How to use the calculator above
- Enter your booking subtotal (nightly × nights + cleaning fee, before tax).
- Set the rate from your county. Vegas Strip = 13.38%. Reno = 13%. South Lake Tahoe = 13.5%. Carson City = 10%.
- Read the total tax and what the guest sees. Note: in Nevada this is the WHOLE tax — there’s no state layer underneath.
