How Kansas lodging tax works

Kansas charges a 6.5% state sales tax on lodging plus a local transient guest tax (also called “TGT” or “bed tax”) of up to 9% at the city or county level. Combined effective rates run 6.5% to 15.5%. Top STR markets:

  • Kansas City KS metro (Wyandotte County) — 6.5% state + ~2.625% county + 8% city TGT = roughly 15%–17% effective for STR-eligible zones.
  • Wichita (Sedgwick County) — 6.5% state + 1% county + 6% city TGT = 13.5%.
  • Lawrence (Douglas County) — 6.5% state + 1% county + 6% city TGT = 13.5%. KU game-day market.
  • Topeka (Shawnee County) — 6.5% state + 1% county + 6% city TGT = 13.5%.
  • Manhattan (Kansas State University) — 6.5% state + ~7.5% city = 14%.

Stays of 29 consecutive nights or longer are typically exempt from the transient guest tax (Kansas uses a 28-night threshold in most statutes; verify with your city).

Platform collection

Airbnb and Vrbo both collect and remit the 6.5% state sales tax in Kansas under marketplace facilitator rules. Coverage on the local transient guest tax varies — Airbnb has voluntary collection agreements with many of the larger cities (Wichita, Lawrence, Topeka, Overland Park), but Vrbo’s coverage is narrower. Always check your listing’s tax disclosure for what’s actually being collected.

What this means in practice

  • State sales tax — handled by both platforms. No filings.
  • Local transient guest tax — depends on city. If Airbnb covers your city, you’re done. If not — or if you’re on Vrbo / direct — register with the Kansas Department of Revenue for the TGT permit and file monthly.
  • 28-29+ night stays — exempt from TGT in most jurisdictions.
  • University-town hosts — football and basketball season generate the bulk of bookings; budget for the local tax disclosure error if you’re new.

How to use the calculator above

  1. Enter your booking subtotal (nightly × nights + cleaning fee, before tax).
  2. Enter the local add-on rate that applies to your address. Wichita 6%; Lawrence 6%; Topeka 6%; Manhattan ~7.5%; KCK metro varies by zip.
  3. The result shows the effective rate, total tax, and what the guest sees.
